I'm back to the Psalms today. I usually spend most of my time in the New Testament. This year I am committed to read and actually think about all of Psalm 119. I left off at Psalm 119:32 out of 178 verses. So I'm now on verse 33. One of the things I love about the Bible is that the people make mistakes. It confirms to me that it truly is the inspired Word of God- the people are so real.
One of our cars is about to die. It has over 135,000 miles and needs to be repaired almost every month. My husband and I were awed by the big SUVs. All the neat space, and room for me to put my photography equipment, canvases, groceries... Ok, my whole office! In these times of financial hardship, we stopped and realized we have to figure out what we really need. Do we really need a gas guzzler as gas prices rise? and all that space? Or do we need to rebuild the old car's engine? It has plenty of space- looks nice, is easy to park, and is very comfortable. I was taught that wisdom asks, "Is that what I want? or what I really need?"
God has promised to provide my needs, but not everything that catches my eye. Living with less and faith in God is far more valuable than worrying about things and bills- late at night. We actually felt really good about our decision to think before spending. This is a beautiful, humble prayer.
Psalms 119:33-40
33 God, teach me lessons for living
so I can stay the course.
34 Give me insight so I can do what you tell me —
my whole life one long, obedient response.
35 Guide me down the road of your commandments;
I love traveling this freeway!
36 Give me a bent for your words of wisdom,
and not for piling up loot.
37 Divert my eyes from toys and trinkets,
invigorate me on the pilgrim way.
38 Affirm your promises to me —
promises made to all who fear you.
39 Deflect the harsh words of my critics —
but what you say is always so good.
40 See how hungry I am for your counsel;
preserve my life through your righteous ways!
THE MESSAGE
There are always critics, at work, home, school, everywhere. The best way I've found to find peace is in reading the Bible, being honest in prayer, exercise and a good nap. : )
